In a One Horse Open Sleigh

Well, maybe not one horse but perhaps two! That's right, a sleigh ride, the perfect way to glide across the snow and enjoy the beauty of Northern Michigan.

Northern Michigan loves winter in every way. Hop on a horse-drawn sleigh or dog sled and experience winter in a comfortable and cozy fashion.

Downtown Harbor Springs Take a tour of downtown Harbor Springs by horse and carriage on Fridays and Sundays, 2-6pm, December 23 through mid March. The loading zones are on Bay Street by either the New York Restaurant or Bar Harbor with drop off spots throughout the downtown area including on Main Street near Island Bean Coffee Company, near Wooly Bugger, and near Gardner Street by the Hotel Janelle site. The 30-minute rides are free of charge.

Pond Hill Farms outside Harbor Springs offers tractor-pulled hay rides on weekends from noon-3 pm. The cost is $4. Call 231-526-3276.

Boyne Highlands and Boyne Mountain are the places for both dog sled and horse-drawn sleigh-rides. The sleigh rides take place December 26-January 1 and every Saturday throughout the winter from noon-3 pm. Adults ride for $10; children 7-12 for $8 and under 6 are free.

Dog sleds run daily throughout the holidays and on weekends during the winter. The sleds hold either two adults or one adult and two small children. The dog sled rides are $75 for 30 minutes; $150 for 60 minutes. Call 231-526-3000.

Stafford's Bay View Inn Enjoy a 30-minute ride through Bay View on Saturdays during January and February. Beginning at 5:30pm and running every 30 minutes through 8:30pm, the rides begin at Stafford's Bay View Inn in Petoskey. House guests rides for $10; $15 for non house guests. Call 231-347-2771.

Terrace Inn, Bay View Two Belgium horses, Bubba and Prince, pull a sleigh through the quiet woods of Bay View every Saturday (if there is snow) through January and February. Up to 14 can hear the sleigh bells jingling from 5:30-8:30 pm with rides departing every 30 minutes from the Terrace Inn in Bay View. Lap blankets are available to keep you cozy, and the tour guide shares a little history of Bay View. House guests are $5 (dining or lodging). Outside guests are $10 adults and $5 children.
